Adobe Acrobat redaction vs Oddseal for freight PDFs
Adobe Acrobat Pro does real redaction when you use it correctly: it permanently removes marked text and images and can remove hidden information. Oddseal is narrower. It is built for freight teams that prepare recipient-specific copies of rate confirmations, bills of lading, and invoices, rebuild every page as a fresh image, and share through expiring links. This comparison reflects Adobe’s documentation as of September 2026.

The short answer
If you already have Acrobat Pro and redact the occasional PDF, Acrobat is a capable, well-documented tool. Its Redact tool marks text, images, and page areas, applies them permanently, and offers to remove hidden information such as metadata, comments, and attachments when you apply.
Oddseal is for a repeated freight job: preparing a limited copy of a rate confirmation, house bill of lading, or commercial invoice for one recipient and sending it without forwarding the original. It suggests freight fields for a person to review, rebuilds every page as an image with the masks burned in, locks download and sharing until an independent check of the stored file passes, and shares through expiring, revocable links.
What Acrobat Pro redaction does, according to Adobe
Each point below is taken from Adobe’s own help and product pages, linked in the sources. Features and plans change, so check the current page before you decide.
Mark, apply, and save a new file
You mark text, images, or areas with the Redact tool and then apply. Adobe says applied redaction is permanent once saved, and Acrobat saves the result through a Save Sanitized Document dialog. Adobe also recommends saving under a different name so the original is not overwritten.

Find text and redact
Acrobat can search for a single word or phrase, a list of words or phrases, or built-in patterns such as phone numbers, credit card numbers, email addresses, Social Security numbers, and dates.

Remove hidden information
The Sanitize and Remove Hidden Information tools can remove metadata, attachments, bookmarks, comments, form data, hidden text, hidden layers, search indexes, cropped content, links, actions, and JavaScript. Adobe notes that redaction alone removes only visible text and graphics, and the sanitize option is a choice you make when applying.

Images and scanned pages
You can redact images and page areas. Adobe explains that a scanned PDF contains only image data, not searchable text, until you run OCR, so text search cannot find words on an unrecognized scan.

Which plans include it
Adobe lists redaction among Acrobat Pro features. It does not appear in Acrobat Standard’s feature list, and the free Acrobat Reader is for viewing. Adobe’s learning pages describe Redact as available in Acrobat Pro, Premium, or Studio. Prices vary by region; check adobe.com.

Sharing by link
Acrobat can share a PDF by link, with settings for anyone with the link, people in your organization, or invited people only, and senders can track views and activity. Adobe’s sharing help did not describe an expiry date for these links when we reviewed it.

Side by side
| Topic | Adobe Acrobat Pro | Oddseal |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | General PDF editing, including redaction, for any kind of document. | Recipient-specific copies of freight documents such as rate confirmations, house bills of lading, and commercial invoices. |
| Finding what to remove | Manual marking, word and phrase search, imported word lists, and built-in patterns such as phone numbers, emails, and dates. | Suggests freight fields such as rates, parties, account numbers, and references. A person reviews every suggestion, can keep values visible, and draws boxes for anything missed. |
| How content is removed | Deletes the marked text and graphics from the existing PDF and replaces them with colored boxes. | Renders every page to a fresh 240-DPI image with the masks burned into the pixels and builds a brand-new PDF, one JPEG per page. |
| Hidden information | An optional sanitize step, offered when you apply redactions, removes metadata, attachments, comments, hidden text, layers, and more. | Nothing from the source file structure is carried over, so the output has no text layer, fonts, metadata, attachments, annotations, JavaScript, or layers from the source. |
| Text in the output | Remaining text stays selectable and searchable. | No text layer. Recipients cannot search or copy the text, which is a real limitation for some uses. |
| Check before sharing | The operator applies, sanitizes, and tests the file before sending it. | An independent reader checks the stored file for page count, extractable text, attachments, JavaScript, and open actions, plus a structural check. Download and sharing stay locked if it fails. |
| Sharing | Links for anyone, your organization, or invited people, with view and activity tracking. | Expiring, revocable links to the redacted copy only, with a record of opens. Recipients are not authenticated, and revoking a link cannot retract a downloaded copy. |
| The original file | Stays wherever you keep it; the redacted version is saved as a new file. | The original stays in your browser. Verified local originals expire after 1–168 hours, default 72; unfinished drafts after 14 days. Expired data is removed when the app runs, so a closed browser cannot guarantee deletion at an exact time. |
| Availability | Generally available as part of paid Acrobat Pro plans. | Self-serve sign-up, with a Free plan and monthly paid plans. |
When Acrobat is the better choice
The recipient needs searchable text
Acrobat keeps the remaining text selectable and searchable. Oddseal output is image-only, so recipients cannot search, copy, or reuse the text.
You redact many kinds of documents
Court filings, HR files, and other non-freight documents gain nothing from freight field suggestions.
You already pay for Acrobat Pro
If redaction is occasional and you test each file before sending it, another tool may not be worth adding.
You also edit, fill forms, or collect signatures
Acrobat is a full PDF editor. Oddseal only redacts and shares.
You need it today
Oddseal is newer and narrower. Acrobat is a long-established, generally available editor.
Files cannot leave your machine
Acrobat desktop works on local files. Oddseal is a hosted service, so the source PDF is uploaded before it is redacted.
When Oddseal fits better
One document goes to different recipients
A carrier, a customer, and a tender board each need a different copy. Prepare a separate redacted copy for each recipient and share each one through its own expiring link.
The fields are freight fields
Buy rates, margins, shipper and consignee names, MC numbers, IBANs, and HBL or booking references are suggested for review rather than found by generic patterns.
You do not want to depend on a sanitize step
Every page is rebuilt as an image, so there is no text, metadata, or layer from the source left to sanitize.
Sharing should wait for a check
Download and sharing stay locked unless the independent check of the stored file passes.
Links should expire
Set an expiry, revoke a link, and see when it was opened, instead of emailing an attachment that lives forever.
Originals should not linger
Originals stay in your browser and expire under the local retention policy. Cleanup runs when you use the app; keep required complete records in your own system.
Limits that apply to both
Neither tool knows what your recipient is entitled to see. Both remove only what is selected, so a value nobody marked stays visible. Pattern search and field suggestions can miss something, so review every page and test the output: select all and copy, search for the removed values, and inspect the page image.
Neither a redacted copy nor a share link replaces the complete document a carrier, customs authority, bank, or insurer requires.
